iPhone 6S Rumours: 10 new features to expect on the 2015 iPhone

Were you just thinking that it’s about time a new iPhone made an appearance? You’re in luck.

September is fast approaching – and assuming Apple sticks to its usual release calendar, this means the iPhone offerings for 2015 are just around the corner. Think more in terms of ‘iPhone 6s’ rather than iPhone 7: which in real terms means a tweaking of last year’s model as opposed to a total revamp. So what’s new? Compiled from some of the more reliable quarters of the online rumour mill, here’s a quick top 10…

1. A 12MP camera

Back in January, there was a suggestion that the new iPhone could be packing a brand-new dual-lens camera complete with optical zoom – which really would mean an enormous bridging of the gap between top-end smartphones and DSLR cameras.

Fast forward a few months and the latest rumours in Phone Arena indicate that dual-lens technology is probably off the cards – but what you can expect is an upgrade that will leave the likes of the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge looking rather old school in the photography and video stakes: a 12MP sensor with 4k video and 240fps slow-mo capabilities.

2. Force Touch

This is a carry-over feature seen recently on the Apple Watch. It’s essentially the next generation of touchscreen, with the ability to distinguish between light and heavier touches and react differently to each. It could prove to be especially useful for gamers.

3. New aluminium frame

So far as screen size is concerned, indications are that the existing 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus formats are likely to remain unchanged. What we could see however, is a new aluminium frame constructed from the same ‘Series 7000’ aluminium alloy developed for the Apple Watch, making it stronger yet less dense than the current shell.

4. No more plastic on the 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch models

The translucent plastic strips that interrupt the metallic uni-body appearance of the iPhone 6 are necessary for radio frequencies to pass through to the antenna inside the casing. TechRadar reports that the plastic could be replaced by a new metal oxide material for a premium all-metal feel.

5. An iPhone 6c

The iPhone 5c was Apple’s pocket-friendly option for those mobile phone owners looking for a smaller, slightly cheaper alternative to the iPhone 5S. It’s now 2-years old and there’s an outside chance that September will see a new version (but don’t bank on it).

6. Sapphire Glass

This was supposed to appear on the iPhone 6 – but production problems got in the way. If it arrives, expect greater scratch resistance for your iPhone screen.

7. A Possible new processor

The A9 set is in the running: it’s smaller, faster and uses less power (good news for battery life).

8. A new rose gold version

If you want to know what this looks like, check out the rose gold version of the Apple Watch.

9. No more Home button?

If this rumour is true, Apple will also have to find a new way of integrating Touch ID technology into the display.

10. OLED Screen

Another innovation lifted from the Apple Watch – and if implemented, raises the possibility of a flexible display.
